Learning Compassion in the Emergency Room

Emergency departments move quickly. Decisions must be made rapidly, and nurses often encounter patients at some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

In the middle of the fast-paced environment, compassion can sometimes appear in small but powerful ways.

One nurse remembered a patient who arrived frightened and disoriented. While treatment plans were underway, the nurse took a moment to sit beside the patient and explain what was happening.

That brief pause changed the atmosphere entirely. The patient’s anxiety eased, and the clinical team could move forward with greater cooperation and trust.

Moments like these remind nurses that compassion is not separate from medical care. It is part of it.
